I don't think the size of the nearbys have any special significance in and of themselves. Note that they are constructed out of individual tools grouped together; when very large you might take note of the tools individually...

But you have the right idea... set the goal and learn to hold longer by progressive experiments. Sort of like learning how to hold your breath under water. Eventually you'll grow gills.
